Learn-ups

I’ve said it before, but the more I work at Automattic, the more I feel the Creed applies to me. This week, I’ll be ticking off a few parts of it and I did so twice today by holding learn-ups for some colleagues.

I won’t just work on things that are assigned to me.
I will never pass up an opportunity to help out a colleague.

Then since the learn-ups are recorded, and these will help other Happiness Engineers, I will communicate as much as possible, because it’s the oxygen of a distributed company.

I went through a new…”thing” we’ll be launching. This is what I was breaking testing last week. When this “thing” fully launches, you can bet I’ll be shouting about it. It’s really cool, and I’m amazed at the work which has gone into it.

learn-ups are important, if we don’t share knowledge, we don’t learn. I have come so far in the past ~30 months as a full timer but I still have a way to go. I’m establishing myself as a SME (Subject Matter Expert) in a few areas, which in turn will help my colleagues expand their knowledge. And obviously, when I need help, I know others will lend their support.

I tried putting some posts on my test WooCommerce site but that has fallen by the wayside currently. I should pick it up again as a trial a few months back told me he found those posts when researching before applying and found them useful as a low level entry point. I’m humbled someone learned from my posts.

When a learn-ups, or any Zoom video chat happens, we record it and host it on our internal video site. We can then reference this later and others can rewatch the recordings if it took place outside their working hours, as I have done a lot. It is also where the Flash Talks live.

I’ve got a few more during the week and probably a few next week and I’m excited to spend time with people I rarely see outside Slack and learn together.

Talking of such. I will never stop learning.

If learning new stuff and helping customers and colleagues sounds like your jam, yes, we’re hiring across the company, and specifically, for Happiness Engineers
